Chapter 14

The conversation with her cousins was almost anti-climactic. Most of them didn't have much more information about what could have happened but had taken the opportunity to see Mindy again. Her immediate family were conspicuously absent and she couldn't say she actually missed seeing them.

By the time everybody had finished their second cup of coffee, most of her relatives were starting to nod off and Mindy smiled to herself when she realized what that meant. Coffee with pie or while people were just sitting around and chatting was such a normal thing during her childhood that it took her several years of going to school and then working as a nurse to remember that coffee was a stimulant. When her classmates were making pots of it to stay up and study she had to pass because it always managed to put her to sleep. That reaction to caffeine came up as a symptom of a specific type of Attention Deficit Disorder and it made a lot of things about her family snap into sudden focus in her memory.

To the best of her recall, nobody in her family had ever been officially diagnosed but it made a whole lot of sense for it to run rampant through the side of their mountain. Most of them channeled the energy and creativity that tended to come with it into the trades they were passionate about with only occasional forays into mischief. Some, though, tended to self-medicate and the drugs they gravitated towards were the ones most likely to calm an over active brain.

Once she'd sent everybody home, Memaw escorted Mindy and Alvola to one of the guest rooms in the main house while Chaegar and Commander LaGrange were told they would be bunking down in Jeb's cabin down the road.

"I'd put you in your old bedroom but, well, I'm not about to send you down to stay with your parents just now and the kids room here is being done over finally," Memaw told her as she led the way down the hall.

"You're not getting rid of the circus animal wallpaper, are you?" Mindy asked.

"That wallpaper's antique at this point," Memaw told her. "And so well preserved to keep it easy to wipe down, I don't think it'll come off short of getting rid of the roof it's hanging on. No, that's staying but we're fixin' to put away the cribs and toddler beds and make space for more desks for the middle schoolers. Ain't no babies comin' for a while unless your generation starts getting knocked up pretty quick."

"I have a dozen cousins," Mindy protested. "Nobody's started having kids?"

"They're all waiting until they're better settled and that makes sense," Memaw told her. "But if they wait too long, they're gonna be having a hard time of it. Problem is, there's not much around these parts to convince them to do otherwise, and a bit of a lack in the courtship department, too."

"I'd disagree but I had to go to space to find someone I was willing to make babies with," Mindy said with a wry smile.
